Introduction Post

Progressing with my studies in a higher institution has always been a no-brainer for me. As the fourth of five children, the upbringing we always had was to prioritize our education, and my parents would always echo that "whatever is worth doing is worth doing well". I had always envisioned myself studying in Europe, however somehow, the United Kingdom never came into question. After finally deciding to study in the UK, last year, I did some research on British universities, placing academic standards and international students' experiences as critical criteria. De Montfort University ticked all the right boxes, and I proceeded to make my application.

My undergraduate program of study is Computer Science (BSc). The course outline from De Montfort University's page shows the following mandatory modules:

  • First year

Block 1: Database Design and Implementation

Block 2: Fundamental Concepts of Computer Science

Block 3: Computer Programming

Block 4: Operating Systems and Networks

  • Second year

Block 1: Object Oriented Design and Development

Block 2: Data Structures and Algorithms

Block 3: Web Application Development

Block 4: Agile Development Team Project

  • Third year

Block 1: Software Development: Methods and Standards

Block 2: Big Data and Machine Learning

Block 3 / 4: Development Project

Optional modules (choose one):

Block 3 / 4: Functional Programming

Block 3 / 4: Advanced Web Development

Block 3 / 4: Fuzzy Logic and Inference Systems

Block 3 / 4: Privacy and Data Protection   (DMU, 2023)

Of all the modules listed above, I am most interested in web application development and computer programming. This is because I aspire to create software for both personal and corporate use. To achieve these goals, some skills I can hone during my stay at DMU include research skills, time management, and computer skills.

In the next decade I see myself working for multinational organizations and tech companies, as a software developer or a web designer.
